Service dogs play an indispensable role as companions for individuals in need, offering not only medical and emotional support but also unwavering loyalty. One such remarkable story unfolded when a devoted service dog became the recipient of a prestigious honor for steadfastly accompanying his human throughout grad school.
Brittany Hawley, hailing from Wilson, North Carolina, grapples with complex regional pain syndrome and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Through the paws4prisons program, she found the perfect canine companion a few years ago—Griffin. The moment Brittany met Griffin, the connection was evident: “Some dogs were scared of the wheelchair,” she shared. “Griffin jumped right into my lap and licked me across the face.”
Griffin entered Brittany’s life as she embarked on a new chapter—pursuing a master’s degree in occupational therapy at Clarkson University. Demonstrating his capabilities, Griffin attended all of Brittany’s classes, aiding her by opening doors, fetching supplies, and offering comfort during moments of anxiety and depression.
“I felt more independent, I was more social, I felt more outgoing with him,” Brittany expressed. As they thrived together at Clarkson, Brittany approached graduation with a unique request—she wanted Griffin to receive his own degree. The university not only embraced the idea but acknowledged Griffin’s exceptional contributions to student success.
In a momentous ceremony, Griffin walked across the stage to accept his honorary degree, recognizing his “extraordinary effort, steadfast commitment, and diligent dedication” to Brittany’s wellbeing and success. The university highlighted their joint pursuit of a graduate degree, attending the same classes and appointments, making Griffin an integral part of the Clarkson Golden Knights family.
Post-graduation, Brittany remains committed to her aspiration of becoming an occupational therapist, particularly focusing on working with veterans and military personnel. Throughout this journey, Griffin will continue to be her constant companion. “Whenever I get a job, he will be with me every single day,” Brittany affirmed, showcasing the profound bond between a dedicated service dog and his devoted owner.
