Ryan Garcia’s PED Controversy: Demands Refund After Positive Test Results
Ryan Garcia might project confidence, but his recent social media post reveals his underlying concerns. Following his win over Devin Haney, Garcia is now facing uncertainty due to a positive test result for a banned substance. The fighter has voiced his demands, seeking restitution if his victory is overturned.
On May 1st, reports emerged that Ryan Garcia, known as ‘KingRy,’ had tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug (PED) Ostarine. These results came from VADA tests conducted before and after his fight against Devin Haney. Garcia immediately protested the results, insisting on further verification. His attorney announced that they would oversee the proceedings of the B-test, a follow-up test to confirm the initial findings. The B-test is scheduled for May 22nd. The big question remains: what if the B-test also comes out positive?
In light of the potential overturning of his victory, Garcia took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to make his demands clear. He sought the return of the money he had paid to Haney ahead of their fight. At the pre-fight press conference, both fighters agreed to a bet: if either came in overweight, they would have to pay the other $500,000 per extra pound. This agreement was specifically targeted at Garcia, who had made comments about being “fat” leading up to the clash.
During the ceremonial weigh-ins, Garcia was approximately 3 pounds over the stipulated maximum weight of 140 lbs. Despite this, it was agreed that he would pay the bet, and the fight would proceed, albeit not as a championship bout. Both Haney and Garcia confirmed on social media that the bet had been honored.
Now, with the potential overturning of his win due to the PED results, Garcia has demanded the $1.5 million back. He wrote, “I need my money back if they overrule my victory… I paid him money and that was to accept the weight… So give me my f**king money back.”
Garcia has vigorously defended himself against the allegations. In a candid conversation on X Live, the 25-year-old suggested that the positive test might have detected a banned substance unintentionally ingested. He speculated, “I think there are two options. I took up tainted supplements that had traces of ostrogen (Ostarine) or whatever the f**k that is.”
Furthermore, Garcia did not shy away from suggesting a conspiracy theory. He speculated that the situation might be a setup orchestrated by Haney’s side. “Or they (VADA) are really f**king with me and they have this up their sleeve. You know, in case Devin Haney lost. It’s just so weird that Victor Conte is so close to VADA. It’s just bro, it’s bullsh*t,” he quipped.
Garcia continued to push this theory on X, writing, “People just can’t imagine someone actually rigging a test…Like Litterally people have done worst things…They tell me but in the end something was in your system…Bruh it magically appeared a day before and after the fight…Don’t be so naive.”
If the B-test also comes back positive, Garcia’s options may be limited. Apart from potential lawsuits to dispute the findings, Garcia’s career could face significant hurdles. The legal and professional repercussions could be extensive, impacting his standing in the boxing community and his future opportunities.
Ryan Garcia’s current predicament highlights the complex interplay between athletic performance, legalities, and personal integrity in professional sports. As he awaits the results of the B-test, the boxing world watches closely. Garcia’s demands for a refund and his defense against the PED allegations underscore a turbulent period in his career. Whether this situation will lead to vindication or further controversy remains to be seen.
