Robert Redford died today at age 89. The longtime Hollywood star made “unusually intelligent films for the mass market,” Richard Raynor wrote, in a 1998 Profile of Redford. “His subject might be the family, or politics, or the system, or love, but he always assumes a belief in what one man can do, which is at the heart of the American dream as much as it is at the heart of what Redford has created for himself.” He was instrumental in fashioning some of America’s most defining contemporary images: the investigative reporter, the loner, the defender of the unregulated outdoors, the opponent of mindless corporate culture, the independent filmmaker, the fly-fisherman, the athlete. Revisit Raynor’s Profile of Redford, who remained elusive and enigmatic in a distinctly unmodern way throughout his storied career
