The Marvel Cinematic Universe has many unresolved mysteries, but one has been unanswered so long that it has become an annoyance that needs fixing.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a major mystery that needs to be solved before the end of Phase 5. With a shared universe as expansive as the MCU, there are bound to be certain questions that go unanswered for long periods of time, many of which are intentionally laid by filmmakers to build intrigue for future installments of the franchise. However, certain mysteries can be played out for far too long with few hints to keep audiences interested in the ultimate conclusion, making for a rather annoying experience. As Phase 5 approaches, one such mystery cannot be put off for much longer.

As the first major superhero movie of 2023, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will kick off Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in epic fashion, marking the beginning of the Multiverse Saga’s second act. Like Phase 4, this particular segment of the MCU will be rather short, ending in 2024 with Thunderbolts. The space in between Quantumania and Thunderbolts will be filled with several previously announced films and Disney+ series, including several stories that are bound to change the franchise forever, giving the MCU plenty of time to fill in the many gaps that have been left behind in recent projects.

The Avengers Tower Mystery Has Gone On Too Long

The mystery of who bought Avengers Tower has been a recurring question for many years, even extending into Phase 4 titles like Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tony Stark first sold the Avengers’ former New York City base in Spider-Man: Homecoming, relocating Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to a campus upstate, as seen in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. While Homecoming made no indication as to who the tower’s mysterious buyer might have been, theories persisted for months after the film’s release. Frustratingly, nearly six years later, the MCU is no closer to revealing who bought Avengers Tower and for what purpose they intend to use it.

The real problem with this ongoing mystery isn’t that it remains unanswered but that no clues have been dropped about the tower’s buyer in nearly six years, leading some to wonder if Marvel’s plans for Avengers Tower changed. With so little evidence to go on, it is difficult for theorists to make any confident claims about the tower’s fate. Instead, aimless speculation has remained the chief method of talk when discerning this forthcoming reveal. With so many Earth-based titles like Captain America: New World Order and Ironheart set to release during the MCU’s Phase 5, there is no reason for this mystery to remain unanswered going into Phase 6.

Who Could Have Bought Avengers Tower

For quite some time, many theories pertain that a New York-based supervillain, such as Wilson Fisk or Norman Osborn, was the one to purchase Avengers Tower from Tony Stark in Homecoming. However, Spider-Man: No Way Home ruled Osborn out by revealing that Oscorp does not yet exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fisk remains a persisting possibility nonetheless, especially given his prominence in upcoming Phase 5 titles like Echo and Daredevil: Born Again and that his operation favors New York City. Additionally, the mention of Avengers Tower in Hawkeye, the series that reintroduced the Kingpin to the MCU, seems to hint that Fisk may indeed be the building’s new owner.

Others suggest that this building is crucial to the Multiverse Saga, perhaps belonging to the Fantastic Four. However, since this group may not be introduced until Phase 6, it seems unlikely that Marvel would have set up the mystery so long before its culmination. However, some contend that a Kang variant may now own Avengers Tower after a Loki easter egg hinted at an alternate reality where that was the case. This could set the buyer up to be revealed in Quantumania, wherein Kang will play a prominent role. Regardless of their identity, the truth about Avengers Tower must be revealed soon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
