Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its Phase One introduction. Here is who has wielded the hammer so far.
Mjølnir, the powerful enchanted war-hammer forged by the Dwarves for the Asgardian Royal Family, is a powerful weapon that can only be wielded by those who are worthy of its power. Thor, the God of Thunder, is the most well-known wielder of Mjølnir, having used it to channel his innate powers like harnessing lightning, controlling the weather, and flying through space. However, it has seen its fair share of battles with other wielders throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As the Allfather and ruler of Asgard, Odin was naturally worthy to wield Mjølnir. However, he was never actually shown wielding the hammer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was Odin who commissioned the Dwarves of Nidavellir to forge the hammer in the first place, and he saw it as a fitting companion for a king. Odin also exhibited the ability to command Mjølnir. He ordered it to deem Thor unworthy when he stripped his son of his power and exiled him to Midgard.

The hammer was Odin’s gift to Thor, and he was also responsible for placing the enchantment on Mjølnir that requires one to be worthy to wield it. Perhaps the Allfather added the “worthiness clause” because Mjølnir originally didn’t belong to Thor but to his firstborn daughter Hela, who wielded it during her and Odin’s conquest of the Nine Realms. Overall, while Odin’s use of Mjølnir was not as prominent in the MCU as that of other characters, his role in commissioning its creation, gifting it to Thor, and placing the worthiness enchantment on it remain important aspects of the hammer’s mythology in the franchise.
5Thor Is the Mjolnir’s Rightful Inheritor
Thor’s use of Mjølnir in the MCU is central to his character and his evolution as a hero. As the God of Thunder and the rightful heir to the throne of Asgard, Thor is a skilled warrior who uses Mjølnir to defeat his enemies and protect his people. Thor’s relationship with Mjølnir is also a key part of his character arc. In the first Thor movie, he is deemed unworthy and banished from Asgard, causing him to lose access to the hammer. However, by the end of the film, he proves his worthiness and regains Mjølnir, symbolizing his growth and maturity as a hero.
In later films, Thor’s use of Mjølnir is not as straightforward, as he loses the hammer in Thor: Ragnarok and instead wields Stormbreaker in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In Thor: Love and Thunder, Thor’s relationship with Mjølnir takes on a new dimension as he treats his weapons like sentient beings. In one scene, he even talks to Stormbreaker like a friend and assures it that it doesn’t have to be jealous about his attachment to Mjølnir. This adds an emotional depth to Thor’s connection to the hammer, which goes beyond its physical power. It highlights how Mjølnir is not just a weapon but a source of comfort and stability for Thor and a reminder of his heritage and responsibilities.

4Hela Wielded Mjolnir for a Brief Time
Hela’s use of Mjølnir in the MCU takes on even greater significance with the revelation that she was the first owner of the weapon. As Odin’s firstborn and the Goddess of Death, Hela wielded Mjølnir during her and Odin’s conquest of the Nine Realms. However, the hammer was lost to her after her banishment to Hel, at which point it became the preferred weapon of Odin’s son Thor. When Hela attains her freedom at Odin’s death in Thor: Ragnarok, she wastes no time in asserting her dominance and taking revenge on her enemies. One of her first actions is to catch Mjølnir mid-flight as Thor throws it at her, showing off her immense strength and skill. She then proceeds to crush the hammer with ease, effectively destroying one of the most powerful symbols of Asgardian might.
3Jane Foster Used Mjolnir as the Mighty Thor
While seeking a cure for her cancer, Jane Foster found herself in New Asgard, where she saw the cracked Mjølnir. Her journey to becoming the Thunder God started when she approached the shattered Mjølnir gaining tremendous powers and abilities after being deemed worthy by the mystical hammer. With Mjølnir, she gained superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, reflexes, and stamina.
Foster’s use of Mjølnir is unique compared to Thor’s, as she wields it with a different fighting style that incorporates its shattered state and reconstruction with her mathematical accuracy. She uses the hammer to heal her own wounds, as well as blasting enemies with lightning. Despite taking many hits from Gorr and his Shadow Monsters, Mighty Thor’s superhuman durability allowed her to continue fighting. However, the continued use of Mjølnir to fight evil and save lives had a cost. It sped up Foster’s cancer, making her weaker every time she used it. Culminating in her fall during the final battle with Gorr and subsequent acceptance into Valhalla.

2Vision Had No Problem Using Mjolnir
Vision’s use of Mjølnir in the MCU was a rare but impactful moment in the franchise. As a powerful android and member of The Avengers, Vision is not the first character that comes to mind when one thinks of wielding the mighty hammer. However, in Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s climactic battle against Ultron’s army, Vision proves himself worthy of the hammer and uses it to great effect. The scene is brief but significant, as Vision nonchalantly lifts Mjølnir from where it had been discarded and wields it with ease.
This act instantly gains the respect and awe of his fellow Avengers, who had previously been uncertain of his true intentions. The moment also showcases Vision’s purity of heart, as he is one of the few characters in the MCU who is able to lift the hammer without any hesitation or inner turmoil. Vision’s use of Mjølnir is not revisited in subsequent films, as the character meets his untimely demise in Avengers: Infinity War. However, the scene remains a memorable and important moment in the MCU, underscoring the idea that worthiness is not necessarily tied to physical strength but rather to one’s character and intentions.
1Mjolnir Proved Steve Rogers Was the Most Worthy Avenger
In the MCU, Captain America proved himself to be more than just a skilled fighter and tactician. In the climactic battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, he was able to wield Mjølnir, proving himself worthy of the power that it imbues. As Cap called upon the hammer, it flew into his hand, unleashing a wave of thunder and lightning that he used to great effect against the Mad Titan. With Mjølnir in hand, Captain America matched Thanos blow for blow, his strength and agility enhanced by the enchanted weapon.
What made Cap’s use of Mjølnir unique was that he didn’t just wield it as a weapon but also utilized its abilities to aid his team, like hurling it for Spider-Man to use as a swing point and using it as a platform to launch himself into battle. It was a thrilling moment for fans of the MCU and cemented Captain America’s status as one of the most iconic heroes in the franchise’s history.
