The fossilized remains of a Roman carriage buried 1,700 years ago along with two horses

The fossilized remains of a Roman chariot that was buried alongside two horses as part of a burial ritual have been discovered by archaeologists in Croatia.

The carriage with what appeared to be two horses had been laid in a large burial chamber for an “extremely wealthy family.”

 

The ponies’ remaining parts and the chariot were completely covered together in what seems to have been a custom saved for exceptionally well off families

Archeologists from the City Exhibition hall Vinkovci and Organization of Paleontology from Zagreb found the Roman carriage on two wheels (referred to in Latin as a cisium) with ponies at the Jankovacka Dubrava site near the town of Stari Jankovci, close to the city of Vinkovci, in eastern Croatia.

It is thought that the finding is an illustration of how people with a lot of money sometimes buried their horses with them.

The disclosure is assessed to be from the third century Promotion however the group of researchers are attempting to affirm its age.


It was a sensational discovery that is unique to Croatia, according to Marko Dizdar, director of the Institute of Archaeology. Archaeologists believe it was part of a burial ritual for “extremely wealthy families.”

He stated, The findings are then subjected to a lengthy restoration and conservation process, as well as an exhaustive analysis.

‘We will learn more about the family whose members were buried in this area 1,800 years ago in a few years.

 


‘We are more intrigued by the actual ponies, or at least, whether they were reared here or came from different pieces of the realm, which will educate us seriously concerning the significance and abundance of this family.


‘We will accomplish this through collaboration with homegrown as well as various European foundations.’
