The actor opened up about playing the superhero role at the age of fifty and how it might end soon.
Though he has starred in various franchises, Jeremy Renner is known for his role as Hawkeye in the MCU. The actor had his Marvel debut with Thor and then became a core member of the Avengers. Renner made multiple appearances in various films and even headlined his own Disney Plus series Hawkeye.
The actor has been returning to the screen and the public after partly recovering from his snowplow accident. Renner previously opened up about his challenges as an actor and even mentioned how he was initially apprehensive about saying yes to Hawkeye as it was a long commitment.
Jeremy Renner Talks About Retirement From The MCU
Actor Jeremy Renner is back to work after taking time off to recover from the snowplow accident he went through early last year. The actor returned to his role as Mike McClusky in Taylor Sheridan’s drama Mayor of Kingstown and will also be starring in Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
Renner recently appeared in the Smartless podcast where he opened up about his recovery from the accident and his experience while filming some of his biggest projects. While he headlined franchise films such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and The Bourne Legacy, the actor’s most famous role is that of Hawkeye in the MCU.
The actor mentioned that though he was initially apprehensive about saying yes to a multi-film deal, he eventually agreed as he knew that it would end at some point.
My whole decade’s booked. I’m going to be 50 years old in f–king tights…You’re an idiot to say no to these things. I knew I was going to miss a lot, but I knew there was an end to it. I spent four birthdays in a row with my assistant. That’s an episode of ‘Will & Grace’.
Renner also mentioned that despite the tough schedule in large-scale films, he still enjoyed working on them and did not mind the paychecks he received to maintain his body.
Jeremy Renner’s Accident Affected His Choice In Roles
Jeremy Renner experienced a near-death accident in early 2023 when he was run over by a snowplow while he was trying to save his nephew. The actor was in an Intensive Care Unit for quite a while and underwent multiple surgeries to recover. Renner took a break from acting to heal from the accident.
He mentioned that the accident and the recovery process have made him choose roles that are not as emotionally and mentally draining. He said during the Smartless podcast,
I just don’t have the energy for it. I don’t have the fuel. I have so much fuel to put into this reality, this body, all this stuff. I can’t just go play make-believe right now. Because that takes a lot of time to get right here every day just so I can, you know, have a positive thought, so I can progress, so I can always keep growing.
The actor also mentioned that he was able to get back into his Mayor of Kingstown character Mike McClusky faster because he had already spent two seasons playing him.
