Honda Will Let You Lease A Five-Year-Old Vehicle Because New Cars Are Too Pricey [UPDATE]

Amid changes to Honda’s certified pre-owned leasing program, we’re reminded that you can lease a 2018 Accord with a factory warranty.

Update: While HondaTrue Used (launched in 2022) does include pre-owned vehicles up to 10 years old, they are not available for leasing. Honda Certified Pre-Owned leasing is available for current model-year vehicles and those up to five years old. Beyond that, used cars with Honda support are available for purchase only.

We have updated this post accordingly and sincerely apologize for the error.

Honda today announced changes to its Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) program, including a new lease program for certain CPO vehicles. Specific details weren’t provided, aside from the automaker stating more choices and flexible costs are now available and targeted at younger, first-time buyers. Honda’s upmarket Acura group announced similar changes.

“Higher new-vehicle prices make the ability to lease Honda certified used vehicles an even more critical gateway to vehicle ownership for young and first-time buyers,” said Dan Rodriguez, Honda’s senior manager of auto remarketing. “We continue to expand our award-winning CPO offerings, to make it simple and easy to consider and purchase a high-quality Honda CPO vehicle.”

Much like a regular lease, here you’d lease a CPO vehicle for a set term with the option to either return it at the end of the program or purchase it at a set price. The CPO vehicles eligible can be from the current model year or up to five years old.

If leasing isn’t your jam, HondaTrue Used and AcuraPrecision Used were announced last year that open up factory-backed purchasing options for used vehicles up to 10 years old. The program includes a warranty for these decade-old machines, namely 100 days and 5,000 miles worth of coverage for the whole enchilada, powertrain and non-powertrain. Acura has the same deal, so you could slip into a 2014 TSX that, according to Kelley Blue Book, has a slightly lower value than the Accord for that year

Honda states its top-tier HondaTrue+ Certified cars receive 60 months or 86,000 miles of non-powertrain coverage and 84 months or 100,000 miles for the powertrain. HondaTrue Certified maintains the same powertrain coverage but drops the non-powertrain warranty to 12 months or 12,000 miles for vehicles already outside the factory warranty. For those that still have a bit of factory coverage, the warranty is good for 48 months or 48,000 miles.
