Best EV for sale in the UK is a new “baby” electric SUV, according to experts who also reveal the winners of their awards.

VOLVO’s new ‘baby’ electric SUV has won a gong for being the best electric car on sale.

The 2023 award, given out by Electrifying.com, saw the pint-sized Swede beat out Rolls Royce’s first electric car, the Spectre.

Ginny Buckley and the other judges picked the Volvo EX30 as their car of the year

The Volvo EX30 also collected the best small family electric car award after the judges said they tested many models.

“The Volvo EX30 oozes Scandi-cool and has plenty of kit, but the biggest shock for the three of us was the price, which means this great-looking mini SUV costs less than an electric Vauxhall Corsa.

“It’s a brilliant package that we predict will be a big hit with buyers,” the judges said.

The Sun’s motoring expert Rob Gill tried the car in June and described it as “impressive”, “cool and understated”, and said it has headlights like “Thor’s hammer”.

Kia’s new flagship, the EV9 was named the large electric family car of the year.

Gill said the Kia was a hot contender for 2024 World Car of the Year

Urban electric car of the year was given to the Jeep Avenger, with the judges praising the compact dimensions, efficiency and chunky looks.

“We think the cuter Jeep Avenger is a breath of fresh air and we love the way that Jeep has reinvented itself for the electric age,” judge Ginny Buckley said.

The MG4 was awarded the money saving electric car award with judge Nicola Hume saying: “This is a great family hatchback which is cheaper to buy and run than equivalent petrol rivals, proving that electric cars can be affordable.”

At the top of the range, the BMW i5 picked up the award for premium electric car of the year.

“The i5 has the ability to make you feel like a million dollars thanks to its quality, performance, technology and comfort,” Buckley said.

Electrifying.com’s competition judges also host the website.

The triumvirate consists of Journalist Ginny Buckley, TV presenter and Formula E reporter Nicki Shields, and Nicola Hume, a motoring journalist and host of Talking Bull, the official Red Bull F1 podcast.

Judges also awarded one award for the innovation of the year.

That gong went to Chinese car maker BYD for their Blade battery design which can remain stable even if a nail is hammered into its cells.
