Jackie Hornung has gained online fame for her unconventional method of transporting her beloved Samoyed, Lumi, using a backpack on the New York City Subway. Her TikTok videos showcasing this commute have amassed a whopping 1.4 million views.
During an interview, Hornung playfully mentioned that NYC subway rules dictate dogs should be in bags, hence Lumi’s placement in a backpack. Videos on her @littlebearlumi account depict her entering the subway, with Lumi comfortably nestled in a green hiking backpack, peeking out playfully.
In discussions with Newsweek, Hornung shared that Lumi, around 1.5 years old and 2 feet tall on all fours, enjoys being carried and remains relaxed in the K9 sports sack. Despite his 55-pound weight, she reassured viewers about the spacious backpack design, ensuring Lumi’s comfort.
NYC regulations require animals to be enclosed and not disturb others on the subway, except for working or service dogs with proper certification. Resourceful commuters have found unique ways, such as using IKEA bags with holes or carrying pets discreetly in handbags, to bypass these rules.
