A year ago, Buddy, a dog, became the victim of a horrifying burn attack carried out by a child. His face was severely damaged in the cruel incident, making headlines and eliciting shock and outrage. However, Buddy’s incredible journey over the past year is nothing short of miraculous.
In April, Buddy returned home with horrific burns on his face after being set on fire. His flesh was scorched, and the pain was excruciating, causing his eyelids to swell shut, leaving him blind. To add to his suffering, he was found with an extension cord wrapped around his neck, which had been used to bind him.
The perpetrator of this heinous crime was identified as a child, but due to Mississippi law, which states that no one under the age of 12 can be charged, the child could not be punished for this cruel act.
Buddy was taken to the Tunica Humane Society for treatment because of the severity of his injuries. Veterinarians were initially concerned about his prognosis, but Buddy never lost his spirit. Sandy Williams of the Tunica Humane Society remarked that it was incomprehensible how someone could be so cruel to a friendly, non-aggressive dog like Buddy.
Dr. Elizabeth Swanson, an associate professor and veterinary surgeon, noted that Buddy’s vital signs were stable but cautioned that his road to recovery would be long, akin to climbing a steep mountain.
Buddy was later transferred to Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine for further care. Despite his injuries, he maintained a positive attitude and good spirits, wagging his tail and cooperating with his caregivers.
Over time, Buddy’s condition improved. He couldn’t see due to the bandages on his head, but veterinarians were relieved to find that his eyelids had not been affected by the burns. His skin grafts showed promising results, and he continued to make daily progress.
After months of rehabilitation, Buddy received skin grafts, allowing him to gradually shed his bandages and return to his old self. He became happier and more playful as his ears were no longer covered, and he could finally see after the bandages over his face were removed in August.
The ability to see marked a crucial milestone in Buddy’s rehabilitation, and his true personality began to shine through once more. His entire demeanor transformed, and he became cheerful, playful, and even enjoyed carrying large balls around the hospital.
Now, a year later, Buddy has made a complete recovery. His face has healed entirely, and he no longer needs to wear an e-collar. He spends his days like any other dog, playing fetch, going for long walks, and enjoying the love and attention he rightfully deserves.
Buddy’s journey from the brink of death to a life filled with happiness and health is nothing short of miraculous. The dedication and care provided by his caregivers, as well as the support and prayers of many, have played a significant role in his remarkable recovery. Buddy’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the power of compassion and care to heal even the deepest wounds.
